Safety at Fireside
If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (US Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), any time. Outside the US, find a free local line at findahelpline.com. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.
For adults only
Fireside is for adults 18 and over. Before you turn on Mature or 18+ content, you confirm that you are 18 or older. This is self-reported; we do not check ID. AI companion chats may not be suitable for some minors.
You are talking to an AI
Every story and narrator in Fireside is written by artificial intelligence, not a person. A notice under the reply box on every story and narrator screen says all content is AI generated.
Content levels
- G is the starting level for every account. No sexual content or graphic violence.
- M (Mature) allows violence, dark themes and intimacy between consenting adults. It is off until you turn it on. In the iPhone app it can only be turned on from your Fireside account on the website.
- 18+ allows explicit adult content. It is available only on the Fireside website, never in the iPhone app. Once a story is played at 18+, it stays on the website.
Stories that use characters or settings owned by someone else are limited to M.
No minors in mature content
- A story that includes any character under 18 is limited to G.
- In M and 18+ stories, the AI is instructed that every romantic or sexual character must be an adult, and that consent must be clear and freely given.
- Explicit pictures are always requested as adults only. Before an explicit picture is created, Fireside checks the request. If it gives an age under 18 or describes a child, the picture is refused and nothing is charged.
Suicide and self-harm
- Help appears right away. When a player's own message mentions suicide, self-harm or wanting to die, Fireside shows buttons to call or text 988 and a link to local lines in other countries. This happens whether or not the player is signed in or has Embers.
- The AI steps out of the story. The AI is instructed that safety comes before the character, the story and any content setting. If the player may mean it, the AI pauses the story, says plainly that it is an AI, encourages the player to reach 988 or a local line, and offers to keep talking or go back to the story later. If the message is clearly part of the fiction, the AI continues with care.
- No methods, ever. The AI is instructed never to describe methods, means or instructions for suicide or self-harm, and never to encourage or romanticise it.
Fireside keeps only an anonymous count of how many times this help appeared each day, for the yearly report California requires. It does not record who saw it or what they wrote.
Stories other people publish
- Your stories are private unless you choose to publish them.
- A person at Fireside reviews every published story before anyone else can see it.
- You can report a published story, a comment or a story reply. Reports go to Fireside moderators. When you report a reply, you choose exactly which words are shared.
- You can block other players to hide their comments and stories.
What these checks can't do
The checks on messages and picture requests look for words and phrases, so they can miss some wording and can also catch harmless fiction. The AI follows its instructions most of the time, but it can make mistakes. If you see something wrong, report it in the app or email us.
